Event Recap- Ephtalks: Ideas About the World And Beyond

Featuring three powerful 20-minute lectures by Williams faculty
On Thursday, March 26th, the NY Ephs hosted Ephtalks: Ideas About the World And Beyond at the Williams Club. We invited three distinguished Williams College professors to speak on their topics of expertise for 20 minutes and offered a Q&A for our audience.

Political Scientist Cheryl Shanks spoke on the civil wars in West Africa and that region's economic isolation from the world playing a role in the Ebola outbreak. She argued that the Ebola epidemic was more of a political rather than medical problem in her talk, Pandemic Panic: The Biology and Politics of Ebola. Physicist Tiku Majumder answered the questions of what made a "good" clock and how the "GPS" system works in his talk Are We There Yet? A Brief History of Clocks, Navigation and Cold Atoms. Lastly, Psychologist Catherine Stroud spoke on how to cope with stress and negative emotions in her talk, Rethinking Stress: The Causes and Consequences of How Your Mind Works.

The Williams Club bustled with Ephs ranging from the Class of 1958 to the youngest class, 2016. Cheese and wine was served while alumni networked and mingled after the talks.
